The UN Partition Plan (Resolution 181)
Following the devastating conclusion of World War II, Britain found itself increasingly unable and unwilling to manage the escalating tensions in Mandatory Palestine. The Mandate, initially granted by the League of Nations, had become a site of intense conflict between the Arab Palestinian population and the growing Zionist movement. Facing mounting pressure and violence, Britain decided to refer the complex issue to the newly formed United Nations in 1947.
The United Nations established the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) to investigate the situation and propose recommendations. This committee was composed of representatives from eleven different countries, deliberately excluding the major powers to ensure perceived impartiality. UNSCOP members traveled to Palestine, gathering evidence and hearing testimony from various groups.
