Synopsis

In a small Texas town choked by persistent drought, the namesake river, usually a lifeblood, lies dormant and low. An old woman, rooted in the town's history, mutters cryptic warnings about the inherent untrustworthiness of water, a sentiment largely ignored by the modern residents. An oilman, embodying the town's reliance on its earthly resources, takes his young daughter to a girl's camp across the river bridge for a sleepover, confident in his control over his world and dismissing the anxieties of others. Unexpectedly, the heavens open, bringing a downpour that is first celebrated, then feared. The parched riverbed transforms into a raging torrent, rising twenty feet in a terrifying surge. The floodwaters claim the old woman's home and sweep away the innocent camp, leaving the oilman trapped on the wrong side, helpless as the river swallows everything he holds dear. As abruptly as it rose, the water recedes, revealing a landscape of devastation and profound loss. His town and family gone, the oilman retreats to his oil field, a place of past triumph now steeped in tragedy. Driven to the edge of madness by grief, he turns on the very symbols of his life's work, screaming at the sky as he cuts down his rigs, a man undone by the unpredictable, devastating power of the water he once took for granted.
