The First Star: The Night the Universe Began Chapter 1: Before There Was Anything Before the Moon floated across the sky. Before the Sun warmed the Earth. Before oceans sparkled, mountains stood tall, or birds sang their morning songs. There was darkness. Not the kind of darkness that comes at bedtime. Not the darkness behind closed eyes. This darkness was different. It stretched forever in every direction. There were no stars. No planets. No colors. No sounds. No time. The universe had not yet begun. Everything was still. Everything was waiting. But deep within the endless darkness, something extraordinary was about to happen. A tiny spark appeared. It was so small that if you blinked, you might miss it. Yet it was brighter than anything that had ever existed. The spark trembled softly, as if waking from a very long sleep. The darkness noticed. For the first time, something shined. The little spark flickered once. Then twice. Then brighter and brighter. A warm golden glow spread through the emptiness. The spark looked around. There was nothing but darkness.
