The Salt of Lost Things

Synopsis

Cairo, 1898. Safiya al-Masri forges the past for a living—not artifacts, but their stories. A wealthy American recluse named Marius Dane hires her to examine a stele he already knows is counterfeit. The real payment is access to her father’s lost research, the research that got him killed. Dane’s museum is a warren of locked rooms and stolen gods. He speaks a language no one has spoken in three thousand years. When Safiya finds a hidden chamber beneath the museum, she discovers not the relic he claims to seek, but a photograph of her father standing beside Dane, alive, dated two years after his reported death. The question is no longer who killed him. It is whether he died at all.
