My name is Obinna. I have one daughter, Kamsi, who is seven months pregnant. Kamsi is not just my only child—she is the only piece of her late mother I have left. Years ago, I lost my first wife, Nneka, to a sudden illness. Kamsi was just 12 years old then. I remember the day of the burial—how she held my hand, her eyes swollen from crying, and said, “Daddy, don’t leave me too.” From that moment, I promised myself I would protect her for the rest of my life. But life moved on. Years later, I remarried Ruth, hoping to rebuild a family. At first, things were peaceful. Ruth had a daughter, Chisom, from her past relationship. I tried to treat both girls fairly, but deep down, I knew Ruth never truly accepted Kamsi as her own. Still, I held on, believing time would heal everything. But that night, I discovered the truth. It was a cold September evening. I closed from work earlier than usual. On my way home, I bought food, thinking I would surprise Ruth. I wanted to bring joy, not knowing sorrow was waiting for me. When I opened the door, silence greeted me. Then my eyes fell on the sitting room floor—and my heart broke. There was Kamsi. My daughter. My only blood. She lay on a thin air mattress, hugging her seven-month pregnant belly for warmth. She looked so small, so helpless, on that cold hard floor. Upstairs, laughter echoed—Ruth and Chisom, enjoying the comfort of the big beds. My chest tightened, my hands trembled. The food slipped from my grasp, containers scattering across the floor. This was no mistake. This was cruelty. Kamsi woke up at the sound, her tired eyes meeting mine. She tried to smile, whispering, “Daddy, I’m fine.” But I knew she wasn’t. I saw the shame in her eyes, the shame my wife had forced on her. That night, I remembered my vow at Nneka’s grave: I will never abandon Kamsi. And so, I made another vow—Ruth thought she ruled this house. She thought she had won. But she had no idea what storm was about to rise.
